Struggling with attention deficit disorder (ADHD) can cause feelings of drowsiness, impaired concentration, and difficulty concentrating. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the brain and affected individuals may experience difficulties in understanding, remembering, and self-administration of reality. ADHD affects a significant portion of the U. S. population with a prevalence of 1 in 4,000 people affected. ADHD is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as being the inability to get or maintain an adequate level of attention and sustaining an ability to concentrate on tasks and/or perform tasks for which there is insufficient benefit. ADHD is also defined as an individual’s inability to focus on or process important information effectively and efficiently. ADHD is a mental health condition that affects nearly every age group. ADHD can have various causes, including a diagnosis that is based on certain medical conditions, psychological disorders, or other neurological disorders. ADHD can also have psychological and physical consequences that affect the quality of life of individuals. People who are diagnosed with ADHD may be more prone to develop comorbidities that impact their quality of life.

A recent study byeHealthOnefound that nearly one-third of adults ages 16 to 44 experience some degree of anxiety or depression.

In this study, researchers from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, sponsored by TUSWEST, analyzed data from more than 600,000 adults in the United States, as well as from more than 400,000 non-high-income countries, about 10 million people in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

In the study, the researchers compared the rates of anxiety and depression associated with the use of Strattera — a medication for ADHD — to those of the placebo. The results showed that those who took Strattera were more likely to experience at least one of the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

“The research suggests that the most common reasons for the anxiety and depression associated with ADHD are the physical conditions and relationship issues,” said lead researcher Dr. Sarah Thompson, an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Virginia and director of the Center for Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. “These are the factors that are often the most significant for the anxiety and depression symptoms.”

The study found that, compared to the placebo group, adults who took Strattera also had about a four-fold higher rate of anxiety than the other groups.

“It is important to note that this is the first study to investigate the impact of medication on anxiety and depression symptoms,” said Dr. Susan Greenblatt, a professor of psychiatry and family medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “This provides a new window into the relationship between medication and anxiety.”

Dr. Jonathan Schondelmeyer, director of behavioral medicine and the researcher, said the findings have important implications for researchers studying the connection between the medications and anxiety and depression.

“We see a need for more studies to evaluate the impact of medication on anxiety and depression,” said Schondelmeyer.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Strattera (atomoxetine) in 2015 for the treatment of ADHD in children, adolescents and adults. This approval sparked a national lobbying campaign to expand access to this medication.

In 2015, the FDA approved atomoxetine for the treatment of ADHD in adults, adolescents and children aged 12 and older. In 2017, the agency approved Strattera for the treatment of ADHD in adults, adolescents and children aged 12 and older.

While it is unknown how Strattera affected anxiety or depression, previous research has shown that there is no increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in individuals taking the medication.

In the study, the researchers found that those who took Strattera were more likely to experience at least one of the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

“We found that compared to the placebo group, the patients who took Strattera had a four-fold higher rate of anxiety than the placebo group,” said Thompson. “This finding suggests that the medication may have more impact on the development of depression in the brain.”

Thompson added that the researchers are currently investigating the long-term effects of Strattera on depression. She said she was surprised the findings were published but that it would be too soon to say for sure.

“I want to make sure it’s done,” she said.

Thompson noted that this is the first study to demonstrate that Strattera can have a positive effect on depression.

“The research is important because it suggests there is a relationship between medication and anxiety,” she said. “This suggests that we may be able to explore these potential mechanisms in the future.”

Sarah Giddens, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, said that this study was particularly important because it is important to understand why some people may be more likely to have anxiety or depression. “In this study, we found that the most common reasons for anxiety and depression were the physical conditions,” she said.

“This is the first study to investigate the impact of medication on anxiety and depression,” said Schondelmeyer.

“This provides a new window into the relationship between medication and anxiety,” Thompson said. “This provides a new window into the relationship between the medication and anxiety, and it will take many years before we can really determine why the anxiety or depression is occurring in the brain.”

Thompson said the study provides the first step in understanding the connection between anxiety and depression.
